Three ways to know if your decor needs an update!

I’m going to guess you are in the same boat as me, and here I am a decorator! I can be oblivious to the need for some change in my home decor! It's oh-so-common to be unaware of the need for some updates. For one thing there are so many other things occupying our lives that who thinks about it?! For another, home is by nature, our comfy zone, so it’s easy to not analyze it. Lastly it can be OVERWHELMING to think about what needs doing because of the domino effect - "If I change this, then this area will look worse..." etc. - or "WHERE do I even begin!" Let’s just breathe in and out and ponder these easy steps.

  1. How’s that working for you? Really - how’s a space working for you? Do you find yourself tripping over something? Feeling overcrowded? Do you enjoy entertaining, but you don’t because there’s just TOO much to do to get ready? We’re going to call this the Function Factor

  2. How do you feel in the spaces in your home? Try really hard to just sit and be in a room for five or ten minutes. Try to isolate how being there impacts your frame of mind. Does it make you feel peaceful, and happy, or bored, or bummed? Let’s call this the Feel Factor

  3. This is the easiest step - Objectify! Take a picture of your space(s) from different standpoints of the room. Then just look at the pictures (preferably on a laptop or project from your phone to a SMART TV, but if you can’t, then on the phone is fine). Why in the world would you do this when you’ve already sat in the space to think about how you feel and you can take a look at it with your own two eyes?! BECAUSE looking at a picture allows you to be MUCH more objective. Remember how I said your home is by nature your comfort zone? When you’re in a room that “It’s my home so ahhhh!” feeling overtakes the “Hmmm, this room is so outdated!” feeling. Looking at a picture allows you to be SO much more objective! We’ll call this the Get Real Factor.

Now that you’ve completed the three steps - Function, Feel and Get Real Factors - what are you going to do about it?  That, my friends, is a topic for my next blog post! Or you can just go ahead and call me!

Have fun and try REALLY hard NOT to get overwhelmed as you do these steps! DO take notes about each room! DON’T try this with your whole house! Choose two or three spaces or if that feels like too much, start with one!

Until next time,

Fran 🙂

This is so great! I would never have thought about breaking down a space based on your 3 factors - Function, Feel, and Get Real. I like it, what a workable way to get it done! Can't wait to hear more!
